Our first week....

It was great getting to know the students in our class this week. We were able to complete a lot of fun activities this week and are looking forward to an exciting year.

In writing we wrote a prompt asking students to write about themselves. Mrs. Sloane and I had a lot of fun reading the students' work. In addition we have been looking at editing our work. As a class students were able to come up with a few goals for them to try and complete over the next few months. Over the next few weeks we will be investigating "Why writers write?". We will be looking at what good writing looks like, by focusing on punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. We will be asking students to bring in one artifact that students can write about towards the end of next week.

In math we completed a journal page exploring Math About Me. We looked at our first math game called, "What's the Secret Number". Please ask your child about this game and then play it as a family. On Thursday we investigated how many ways we can represent 18 (please see the below picture). Moving forward next week we will be exploring patterns.

How many ways we can represent 18.

During inquiry we explored The Engineering Process. Please ask your child about this. Also, please see below for The Engineering Process that we will be following for our maker challenges over the course of the year. Today we completed the marshmallow challenge. Please see below for some picture of our challenge.

For our class read aloud we have been exploring what does it mean to be cool in the third day by following Robbie's experiences in the book "How to be Cool in the Third Grade" by Betsy Duffey.

Also, we started looking at different comprehension strategies for understand a story while reading. The first strategy we explored was "Checking for Understand". Please see below for some techniques on this strategy in which you can work with your child at home.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED:

We are super excited as we have an archeologist coming into the school in September. Each class requires four volunteers for our class to be successful. Mrs Quilley's class requires four volunteers for Monday, September 17th (afternoon) and Mrs. Sloane requires four volunteers for Wednesday, September 19th (afternoon). If you are able to volunteer please email your teacher.

We hope you have a great weekend!!!
