Our second week was busy and a great deal of learning took place. In math we started looking at increasing patterns and pattern rules. We explored the pattern 2, 5, 9, 14, 20, 27.... to try and figure out the pattern rule. Please talk with your child about this pattern rule. Next week we will be continuing on with decreasing patterns and differences between patterns. Also, the students have been given two math games in which they can play with their families. Please talk with your student about these games. On a daily basis we work through a daily Number Talks. This is where students are shown one problem and students share their strategies with the class. Please talk with your child about this process.

In writing, we have been discussing what is the author's purpose to write, after listening to the poem "Invitation" by Shel Silverstein. Students created Thinking Invitations and invited their friends to a thinking party. Students then created Brain Pockets which will help generate ideas for them to write in their Daily 5 from their past experiences. Please see below for our class Brain Pocket.

Moving forward we will be investigating hook sentences that will have readers excited about reading our writing. As well as, looking at our artifacts and writing about them.

We looked at two strategies for our CAFE this week, one from comprehension strategies and the other from our fluency strategies; Make a Picture or Mental Image and Use Punctuation to Enhance Phrasing and Prosody. Please see below for some strategies in which you can help with your child.

It's encouraged that your child read at least 15-20 minutes a day. Some students were sent home with a home reading book; however, where some students have chosen to read their books from home. If your child hasn't come home with a home reading book and you would like him/her to bring home a weekly reading book please email me. The books will be switched out once a week. Also, if you are able to volunteer once a week (or every second week) to help switch out the home reading books please email me.

On Friday we started exploring Pixton comic. We will be creating some great comic strips throughout the year, for various subjects, through this software program. Students started to create a comic script based on "What would happen if you ran into a dinosaur?". Please see below for some pictures. I will be sending your child's login information home on his/her folder so your child has the opportunity to share with you his/her learning.

Also, Scholastic book orders are due next Tuesday. At that time I will put all the orders through. Thank you!

Meet the Teacher Night:

Reminder that next Thursday, from 6:30-7:30, is meet the teacher night. I will be giving two presentations at this time; one will be at 6:30 and the other at 7:00.
