Our third week .....

We started off our week with a fun afternoon as archeologists. With the help of Discover Archeology, we learned how to re-build a bison using its bones, identify items that are categorized as 'artifacts' or 'ecofacts' and observe various spear heads. Students had an exciting time with these activities where they explored all four stations. Please ask your child about the activities that took place at these stations.

During math we finished our investigation with increasing patterns and started to look at decreasing patterns. The following is an open-ended question that you can ask your child about an increasing pattern:

1) Have your child create an increasing pattern. Then have them describe this pattern by stating the pattern rule, which includes the starting point and a description of how the pattern continues.

Also, your child learned the game "All Hands on Deck" please have your child explain to you this game as they will be writing the rules out next week.

In writing we are exploring writing detailed sentences. Instead of writing the sentence "I love snow". The class discussed adding details after the initial fact, such as "I love snow because I enjoy performing funny fails with my brother on the trampoline".

We looked at two strategies for our CAFE this week, one was from the expanded vocabulary strategies and the other from our accuracy strategies; "Tune into Interesting Words" and "Skip the Word and Come Back". Please see below for some strategies in which you can help with your child.

Next week Cranston School, as a whole, will be looking at 2 books, "Shi-shi-etko" by Nicola Campbell and "When We Were Alone" by David Robertson. The discussion coming from these books will lead up to Orange Shirt day on October 1st. The purpose of looking at these books is to develop a stronger sense belonging and community. As a school community we will then create an art project that will be displayed throughout the hub and the halls of the school.

Reminder:

October 3rd is Picture Day
